Jobs in Waste Management

Career Opportunities in the Waste Management & Recycle Sector

Waste management probably isn't a career that most people would pick, but there are a number of jobs for people of all abilities, from unskilled labor to very technical roles that require college degrees. Plus, waste management is a fairly stable field that isn't affected much by economic conditions.

Garbage collection

The low job on the totem pole in waste management is garbage collector, but it is a good starting job for someone without many skills. The work can be very demanding, as it is done outside in all kinds of weather and you regularly encounter hazardous substances. The pay isn't great either unless you live in a city where garbage collection is a city function or where garbage companies are unionized. But it does provide a starting point for those without skills or education.

Landfill worker

Another area of waste management is working in a landfill. Most of these jobs involve running equipment, so you do need to have some experience with heavy equipment such as a bulldozer, but these jobs pay better than garbage collection jobs.

Wastewater treatment plant worker

Wastewater treatment plants have jobs ranging from laborers who clean out the machinery and pipes to maintenance people to technicians and managers who help make sure the plant is running as it should. Though some of these jobs are not very pleasant, they usually pay fairly well because they are city government jobs.

Recycling plant worker

Another area of waste management is recycling, which is a growing field as more and more homeowners and municipalities recognize the value of recycling. Jobs at a recycling plant can range from drivers and laborers to pick up the recycling, to assembly line workers who weed out by hand non-recyclables, to managers needed to run the plant. The field offers much opportunity.
